Restoring wholeness through art and compassion

Areola Reconstruction at Journelle Skin

Areola tattoo reconstruction is a paramedical tattooing procedure that uses precision pigmentation to recreate the natural appearance of the areola and nipple complex. It is one of the most meaningful services Laura offers — providing a restorative final step for clients who have undergone mastectomy, breast reconstruction, breast reduction, or other procedures that have altered the appearance of the nipple-areola complex.

The treatment uses three-dimensional shading and color-matching techniques to create a realistic, natural-looking areola that blends with the surrounding skin. Laura works carefully to match the color and tone of your natural skin — or, for bilateral reconstruction, to create a result that appears balanced and symmetrical. The procedure is non-surgical, requires no anesthesia, and is performed in a private, compassionate setting.

Many clients find this procedure to be a deeply meaningful part of their recovery — a moment of reclaiming their body and completing their surgical journey. Laura approaches every appointment with the sensitivity and care this service deserves.

Please note: The treatment area must be fully healed from surgery — typically at least 6–12 months post-operative — with no remaining scabbing, swelling, or signs of infection. Please consult your surgeon before booking if you have any questions about your healing status.

If you have any underlying medical conditions or are currently undergoing active treatment, please consult your physician prior to your appointment.

Treatment Details

Downtime

Mild redness, tenderness, or slight swelling in the treated area for 24–72 hours. Surface healing typically takes 7–14 days, with pigment continuing to settle for several weeks. Final results are visible approximately 4–6 weeks after each session.

How to Prepare

Ensure the area is fully healed post-surgery (typically 6–12 months, and cleared by your surgeon). Avoid sun exposure and tanning on the chest for at least 2 weeks before your appointment. Do not apply lotions or products to the area on the day of your procedure. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and blood-thinning medications for 24–48 hours before. Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the treatment area.

Aftercare

Keep the area clean and dry for the first 24–48 hours. Follow Laura's instructions for gentle cleansing and applying a thin layer of aftercare ointment as recommended. Do not pick, scratch, or peel any scabs — allow them to shed naturally. Avoid direct sun, swimming, saunas, and heavy sweating for 7–10 days. Avoid any products or makeup on the area until fully healed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is a candidate for areola reconstruction?

This procedure is designed for clients who have undergone mastectomy, nipple-sparing or skin-sparing breast reconstruction, breast reduction, or other surgeries that have altered the appearance of the nipple-areola complex, and whose surgical site has been fully healed for at least 6–12 months. Clients with radiated skin should discuss their individual case with both their surgeon and Laura before booking.

How realistic do the results look?

Using three-dimensional shading and color-matching techniques, Laura creates results that appear natural and dimensional in normal lighting. The realism depends on individual skin characteristics and the number of sessions completed — most clients achieve their best result after the initial procedure and one perfecting touch-up.

Is the procedure painful?

Sensation in reconstructed breast tissue varies significantly by individual. Some clients have reduced or absent sensation in the area following surgery, which can make the procedure very comfortable. For clients with normal sensation, a topical numbing cream can be applied before treatment.

How long do results last?

Results are long-lasting, with most clients seeing their results remain stable for several years. Touch-ups may be desired over time as pigment subtly fades. Sun exposure and skin type affect longevity.

Do I need clearance from my surgeon?

While surgical clearance is not always required, it is strongly recommended — particularly for clients with recent surgery, radiated skin, implants, or any active medical treatment. Laura will review your history during consultation and can advise if additional clearance is needed.
