Scar Camouflage at Journelle Skin

Scar camouflage is a paramedical tattooing technique that uses carefully matched pigment to minimize the visible contrast between scar tissue and the surrounding skin. The goal is not to erase the scar entirely, but to blend it — reducing its visual impact and allowing it to recede naturally into the skin so it is far less noticeable at a normal viewing distance.

The treatment is effective for a wide range of scar types, including surgical scars from procedures such as C-sections, abdominoplasty, and breast surgery, as well as stretch marks, burn scars, self-harm scars, and other areas of hypopigmentation (lighter-than-skin-tone scar tissue). Laura uses advanced color theory to develop a custom pigment blend that matches not only your skin tone, but its undertones — ensuring the most natural result possible across different lighting conditions.

Because scar tissue absorbs and retains pigment differently from normal skin, multiple sessions are often recommended to build color gradually and achieve the most even, lasting result. Pricing is based on the size of the area treated.

Please note: Scar camouflage requires the scar to be fully healed — typically at least 12 months old — with no remaining redness, active inflammation, or open areas. Scars that are still pink, raised, or actively healing are not candidates. Laura will assess suitability during your consultation.

Treatment Details

Downtime

Mild redness, tenderness, or slight swelling in the treated area for 24–72 hours. Surface healing takes approximately 7–14 days, with pigment continuing to settle for several weeks after.

How to Prepare

Ensure the scar is at least 12 months old and fully healed. Avoid sun exposure, tanning, and self-tanners on the area for 2 weeks before your appointment, as this affects color matching. Do not apply lotions, oils, or products on the day of the procedure. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and blood-thinning medications for 24–48 hours prior. Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area.

Aftercare

Keep the area clean and dry for the first 24–48 hours. Apply a thin layer of aftercare ointment as directed. Do not pick, scratch, or peel any scabs — allow them to shed naturally. Avoid direct sun, tanning, swimming, saunas, and heavy sweating for at least 7–10 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of scars can be treated?

Scar camouflage works best on fully healed, stable hypopigmented (lighter-than-skin-tone) scar tissue. Common candidates include surgical scars (C-sections, tummy tucks, breast surgery), stretch marks, burn scars, self-harm scars, and other areas of skin discoloration. Scars that are still pink, raised, or keloidal may not be appropriate candidates.

How many sessions are typically needed?

Most clients require at least 2–3 sessions to achieve the most natural, blended result. Scar tissue is less predictable than normal skin in terms of how it absorbs and retains pigment, so results are built gradually. Laura will provide a recommended treatment plan during your consultation.

Will the result look natural?

Laura uses advanced color-matching techniques to develop a custom pigment blend calibrated to your specific skin tone and undertones. The goal is a result that blends seamlessly in normal lighting — not a perfect match in every condition, but a significant reduction in visible contrast.

Is there a consultation before the procedure?

Yes. Laura assesses the scar's characteristics, skin tone, and suitability before proceeding with treatment. Not all scars are candidates — a consultation ensures that scar camouflage is the right approach and that realistic expectations are established.
